On July 4, 2010, I embarked on a journey to Senegal, Africa, accompanied by tour guide Kobiana and Mary Nikagan, to fulfill a lifelong childhood dream of acquiring a djembe. During our three-week excursion, we traversed various locales, commencing in Dakar and utilizing diverse modes of transportation, including cars, boats, and buses, to reach Kobiana's village, Adien, where I resided with his family. Kobiana and his associate, Keba Camara, facilitated my connection to my djembe in Ziguinchor, Senegal, and arranged for giraffe carvings on the instrument in Casamance. The trip's pinnacle was a mesmerizing performance drumming with fellow drummers and dancers around a bonfire on the beach. Throughout our travels, Kobiana ensured my safety, well-being, and happiness, while introducing me to local agricultural practices and the processing of cashews for market sale. This extraordinary journey yielded a treasure trove of memories and a deep affection for Kobiana's family. ~Adele Gangai
